Help2Serve.Care programs are designed for college-aged students and adults (18+) — whether you are a student, young adult, adult demonstrating purpose, gap year participant, pre-health professional, early-career or practicing clinician, or family participant committed to service. There is no upper age limit.
Participants under 18 are welcome but follow a separate application process and are typically hosted within a custom immersion with additional accompanying adult supervision and support. For those under 18, please enquire directly about opportunities.
No prior language knowledge is required. For Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, an optional Spanish Language Week is available before your main program. It starts one week before most published immersion dates, with adjusted timing for certain winter cohorts. Program leaders and local partners are experienced working with English-speaking volunteers. Yes — and academic credit support is available for both the Integrated Immersion and the Single-Track Specialized pathway. You arrange independent study credit with your academic advisor; Help2Serve.Care provides course syllabi, on-site evaluations by your project leader, and full documentation of service hours, focus-area hours, and reflection work. The standard course syllabus option has a $100 fee; a custom evaluation costs $50. Begin the conversation with your advisor early — our leadership is glad to support your conversation with documentation, learning objectives, or faculty letters as needed.
The four steps are identical — place, focus, people, shape — because both audiences are building the same program. What differs is step 3. Students choose how to bring friends, a club, or a faculty member. Faculty choose how much of the group they want to carry, from a simple referral through to co-leading a cohort with costs covered and an honorarium.
No. Most people start with the country and work forward, but plenty of applicants start from a focus area, or from a group they already have. Every box on the map links straight to its own page.
Fourteen days of structured service-learning make up Phase One. Participants may then choose to continue into an optional seven-day Cultural Exploration in Phase Two. Together, for participants choosing both phases, they form the Signature 21-Day Immersion. Custom lengths are also available for groups, faculty cohorts, and institutional partners.
Yes, and a large share of participants do. Solo applicants join a cohort of students from other institutions. Alumni consistently describe the mixed cohort as one of the strongest parts of the experience.
No. Health-focused cohorts include pre-med, pre-nursing, public health, kinesiology, biology and undeclared students alongside clinical trainees. Tasks are assigned by training level, so everyone works — just not at the same scope. If you are unsure where you would fit, email info@help2serve.care with your program and year.
Scope is agreed before departure with the in-country clinical partner. Undergraduates without clinical training typically support health education, screening logistics, vitals under direct supervision, intake and community assessment. Students enrolled in a clinical program work at the level their school and preceptor authorise. Nobody diagnoses, prescribes, or performs procedures outside their scope.
That decision belongs to your institution, not to us. What we provide is the documentation your school needs to evaluate it: a syllabus, contact hours, learning outcomes and supervisor sign-off. Start the conversation with your program director before you apply — see our Academic Credit page for what to bring them.
The Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Belize all run health-focused service. In Spanish-speaking destinations, adding the optional Spanish language week meaningfully increases what you can contribute in a clinic setting.
The criticism is largely deserved, and it is why this model is built the way it is. Volunteers never replace paid local labor, never work outside their training, and never lead care. Projects are selected by community partners and continue between cohorts. Our free Ethical Service-Learning Guide sets out the full framework, including the things we decline to do.
No. Cohorts mix environmental science and marine biology students with people from completely unrelated majors. Field training happens on site. What matters more is physical willingness — conservation days involve heat, water, mud and repetitive work.
Not for most work. Coral and reef activities are structured so that snorkel-level participants have a full role, and dive-certified participants can take on additional tasks where the site permits. Certification requirements vary by destination and season, so ask before you plan around it.
More than most people expect. Anticipate several hours of outdoor labor daily in heat and humidity, with early starts. There is a role for every fitness level, and in-country staff adjust assignments, but this is not a light-duty focus area.
Frequently, yes — but it must be arranged in advance. Site partners can support structured data collection when they know what you need before the cohort arrives. Faculty-led groups have the most flexibility here. Contact us at least one full semester ahead.
Costa Rica focuses on wildlife and habitat conservation. The Dominican Republic focuses on coral and coastal restoration. Belize centers on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, ecological restoration, and wildlife research.

Neither is required. Cohorts are briefed on site and work alongside local teachers who set the plan. That said, in the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica the optional Spanish language week changes the experience substantially — most participants who add it say it was the single best decision they made.
Physical construction and repair: mixing and laying concrete, painting, basic carpentry, digging, and hauling. Local skilled trades lead every build. No prior construction experience is expected, and every fitness level has a role.
Yes, this focus is available in every destination. Community development and childhood education service runs in the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Belize.
No. You indicate a preference on the application, and you can change it during pre-departure planning. Both tracks are the same length and the same cost.
The exact split varies by destination and season, because it follows the partner organizations' actual project schedules. In every case you get meaningful working exposure to all three, followed by specialization days concentrated in the one you choose.
The rotation days are working days, not observation days — you are assigned real tasks in each. If depth in a single field is your priority, the Single-Track immersion exists for exactly that, and we will say so plainly if it fits you better.
It depends entirely on the course. Discipline-specific courses — a nursing clinical, a marine biology field course — almost always run Single-Track. Interdisciplinary, global-studies, honors and first-year seminar cohorts almost always run Integrated. Custom immersions can do either, or blend them.
Yes, in the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Belize.

A valid U.S. passport is required for all international programs. Visa requirements depend on your country of origin and your citizenship status, and they can change periodically—so it is important to know your requirements well before departure. Some destinations require an electronic travel authorization even for U.S. citizens, so check your specific destination’s requirements. Aim to have all travel documents in hand 60 days before departure, and no later than 45 days prior. Also remember that most countries require your passport to remain valid for at least six months beyond your return date, and that requirement varies by destination. Our team is available throughout your preparation process.
Vaccine recommendations should be reviewed and approved by your primary care provider and, if needed, an international travel clinic that can coordinate with your primary care office. That ensures you are vaccinated according to current medical guidelines and in accordance with your own health history. Our team is available throughout your preparation process.
Every participant receives a post-acceptance manual, written in detail for your specific destination. It covers your deposit due dates and payment plan arrangements; the travel insurance details required of all participants; whether you are traveling on a group flight or arranging your own—details will be provided for both options including the designated airport to travel to and the arrival time stipulations that go with it; and what happens once you land—your first in-country orientation and the onward travel to your first overnight destination in the host country.
For deposits for accepted applicants only, you will receive a payment link in your acceptance email to provide your deposit. Your $500 deposit is payable to Help2Serve.Care (Program & Payment Transparency) and is due within 60 days of acceptance or 60 days before departure, whichever comes first. If accepted fewer than 60 days before departure, it is due within 72 hours. Change of mind: cancel within 24 hours of paying and we refund the full $500, no fee. Participants on a customized program also receive an individual manual specific to their group, with additional program planning details. A second manual, the pre-departure manual, follows approximately three weeks before departure.

Orientation is held approximately three weeks before departure by video conference, with your entire cohort together, and includes a full Q&A session to address any remaining questions.
